1861-C $5.00 PCGS AU58

1861-C $5.00 PCGS AU58

Mintage: 6,879

This is the final issue made at the Charlotte mint, and an estimated 150-175 exist. The 1861-C half eagle is not all that hard to find in VF and EF but it is rare in the lower AU grades and very rare in properly graded AU58.

I believe that there are just two or three known in Uncirculated (the Elrod coin, graded MS63 by PCGS and the Dingler coin graded MS61 by PCGS) as well as a few others in MS61 holders that are sliders. I have seen very few properly graded AU58?s and the present example rates as one of the few that I am aware of that is both original and properly graded. The surfaces are far cleaner than usual and the strike is above average for the date. Both sides are lustrous and show nice soft light yellow-gold and rose colors.

150th Anniversary of the Civil War: 1861-D Gold $1.00 PCGS MS60; Historically Significant Gold Dollar

150th Anniversary of the Civil War: 1861-D Gold $1.00 PCGS MS60; Historically Significant Gold Dollar

Mintage: 1500-3000 (?)

The 1861-D is the most historically significant gold dollar. It was produced by the Confederacy after the Mint was seized in April 1861 and it is in demand by many types of collector. It is less rare than generally realized with as many as 100 known. Most are in the AU grade range. There are around 12-15 in Uncirculated including at least three or four in MS63 and another one or two in MS64. All examples are weak on the obverse border with the U in UNITED not fully formed.
